These 'elements of vanity' are of central importance in this painting by Pereda.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A young nobleman has fallen asleep in an armchair on the left, his head, pale with sleep, supported by one hand. The content of his dream - the world and its vanity - is displayed on the table on the right, against a pitch-black background. Other objects of vanity, apart from the power insignia mentioned above, are books, music, coins, jewellery, weapons and a mask (as a symbol of Thalia - the theatre). These are all considered futile. Transience is symbolized by two skulls - one of them rolled over so that we can see inside - as well as by a burnt candle and a clock. The flowers in the vase, too, are symbols of vanity.     <content type="html">Открытое письмо о Премии Кандинского-2008&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1.Нам нет никакого дела до художника Алексея Беляева-Гинтовта. Нас ничего не связывает с премией Кандинского и стоящими за ней людьми. Но сочетание такой институции публичного признания и такого художника, как Беляев-Гинтовт, номинированного в шорт-лист этой премии, - это важный культурный и политический симптом.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Своих политических взглядов Беляев-Гинтовт не скрывал никогда. С середины 90-х, находясь под влиянием доктрин протофашистского идеолога Дугина, он эпатирует "либеральную интеллигенцию" своим ультраправым пропагандистским декором, а в последние годы является стилистом "Евразийского союза молодежи" - крупной вождистской секты, выполняющей альтернативный подряд на эстетическое и идеологическое оформление имперских претензий российской власти.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Какая бы "мифотворческая" муть не оседала в декларациях "евразийцев", это - хорошо знакомое по трагической истории XX века фашиствующее эстетство.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name="cutid1"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2.Решение жюри премии ярко выражает состояние современной российской культуры, политики и общественной жизни. Уже давно они объяты глубоким сном неолиберального "разума" - в локальной версии, доводящей до гротеска все его особенности. В этом сне нет различий между правым и левым, красным и коричневым, фашизмом и коммунизмом. В нем признается только частная собственность и "саморегулирующийся" рынок, в кромешной тьме которого все кошки - серы.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Именно в этой точке сомнамбулического безразличия соединяются сегодня эклектическая "лево-националистическая" идеология "евразийства" и позиции видных представителей российской бизнес и медиа-элиты, входящих в жюри и попечительский совет премии.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Пусть цветут все цветы!", "Все идеологии стоят друг друга!", "Искусство вне политики!" Так в один голос заявляют эти респектабельные господа. Они делают выгодные финансовые и символические вложения в искусство, и с помощью "очевидных" лозунгов легитимируют возможность откровенно фашистских высказываний в публичном пространстве.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Мы политические убеждения художников не обсуждали. Что же касается эстетики, то я считаю, что это очень интересное явление", - говорит Александр Боровский, заведующий отделом новейших течений Государственного Русского музея, член жюри премии Кандинского. Он видит в творчестве Гинтовта "ироническую дистанцию", "игру" и делает вид, будто ему ничего не известно о политических взглядах художника. Вероятно, сходной позиции придерживается большинство членов жюри.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Но, если для российских экспертов, входящих в состав жюри премии, идеологическая подоплека подобного искусства не совсем ясна, тогда, может быть, их немецкие коллеги, соучредители премии из Фонда искусств респектабельного DeutscheBank'a, могли бы напомнить о судьбе нацистского искусства у себя на Родине? Однако, похоже, иностранные члены жюри не имели возможности по-настоящему разобраться в российском контексте. Но им тоже придется нести ответственность за выбор жюри.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Решение жюри может быть истолковано как солидарность с его (Беляева) позициями" - полагает Иосиф Бакштейн, комиссар Московской Биеннале. От себя мы прибавим, что сделаем все возможное, чтобы оно было истолковано и воспринято именно таким образом.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3.По меткому определению ведущего российского арт-критика Андрея Ковалева, включение художника Беляева-Гинтовта в шорт лист премии Кандинского выражает "стремительную фашизацию правящего класса". &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Названия работ Гинтовта красноречивы: "Правый марш", "Наш сапог свят!", "Слава русскому оружию!", "Мы будем лечить вас йадом!", "Абсолютная родина", "Все сжечь", "Какой урон ты нанёс врагу?!". Десятки и сотни убийств на национальной почве&lt;br /&gt;совершено за последние годы под лозунгами, подобными этим, напрямую&lt;br /&gt;вырастающим из манифестов "Евразийского движения":"+Мы Союз Господ, новых повелителей Евразии. Мы утвердим свою волю суверенно, непоколебимо, безотзывно. +Наша цель - абсолютная власть+ Нам поклонялись народы и страны, нашa длань простиралась в полмира, а подошвы топтали горы и долины всех континентов земного шара. Мы все вернем назад+ Россия - вот истинная мера вещей. То, что ее и ее народ укрепляет, объединяет, усиливает - благо, все, что их ослабляет - зло. Так рождается "опричная этика". Родина Русь превыше всего".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Имеет ли в виду эти призывы Николай Молок, когда утверждает, что творческая позиция Беляева (оформляющего все эти бредни в "большой художественный стиль") "выражает тенденцию госстроительства"?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Имеет ли он в виду, что российское госстроительство - это призывы к милитаризму, эстетствующей героике, культу насилия, войне, самым оголтелым формам фашиствующего неравенства "господ" и "рабов"?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Хочет ли жюри престижной премии сообщить нам своим решением о том, что соответствующий стиль уже узаконен в российской публичной сфере?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4.После Второй мировой войны современное искусство могло быть каким угодно, только не крайне правым и не фашизоидным. Однако теперь, с выходом на мировую арену российского капитала и кризисом существующей модели неолиберального капитализма, подыскивающего для себя новые формы и идеологии, современное искусство, как и связанный с ним бизнес, осваивает эти новые для себя сферы.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Бездарно выглядит [кавказская] горная дорога, по которой не идут российские танки", - полагает Беляев-Гинтовт. Это высказывание задает известное фашистское распределение эстетического и политического. Весь мир рассматривается под углом его формирования "волей" художника-господина, который хочет "красоты" и "власти". Если смерть "красива" - то "да, смерть!". Пусть даже это смерть миллионов.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Наша "политизация искусства" сегодня - отказ судить о работах Гинтовта по тем же эстетическим законам, что и о работах других современных художников, как бы далеки от нас они ни были. Наши расхождения с "попечителями", арт-дельцами и критиками, поддерживающими ультраправое искусство - расхождения в первую очередь политические. Только введя политический критерий, мы можем говорить об искусстве как об искусстве; только поместив Гинтовта в контекст ангажированного ультраправого искусства, мы можем давать ему серьёзные эстетические оценки.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a name='cutid1-end'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5."Расцвет" российского современного искусства последних лет, тесно связанный с освоением избыточных нефтеприбылей, происходит с особой буржуазно-прогрессистской самоуверенностью, подавляющей любые сомнения в реальной прогрессивности форм и содержания этого "расцвета". Насквозь реакционный, глубоко антидемократичный по своей сути российский правящий класс продвигает свои осознанные материальные интересы и полусознательные эстетические предпочтения, коррумпируя культурную и интеллектуальную сферы.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Одна из статей того же Молока называлась "Всем молчать!" и говорила о том, что не стоит критиковать Московскую биеннале, а надо радоваться, что "она у нас есть".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Всем молчать!" Таков результат 15-летней политической деградации российского общества. Таков итог уходящей эпохи транснациональной приватизации всего и вся. Она оставила общество фактически лишенным каких-либо навыков критического анализа, демократической дискуссии, гражданской, классовой солидарности.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Мы призываем не молчать всех тех, кто способен на критическую мысль и солидарное действие. Мы призываем прервать фашизоидные грёзы российских элит и аполитичную дремоту тех, кто пассивно движется вместе с ними в одном русле.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Фашизм, нацизм, национализм любых мастей - на свалку истории!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Социалистическое движение "Вперед"&lt;br /&gt;Группа "Что Делать?"</content>

Rather than fill this iconic space with a conventional sculpture or installation, Salcedo has created a subterranean chasm that stretches the length of the Turbine Hall. The concrete walls of the crevice are ruptured by a steel mesh fence, creating a tension between these elements that resist yet depend on one another. By making the floor the principal focus of her project, Salcedo dramatically shifts our perception of the Turbine Hall&amp;rsquo;s architecture, subtly subverting its claims to monumentality and grandeur. Shibboleth asks questions about the interaction of sculpture and space, about architecture and the values it enshrines, and about the shaky ideological foundations on which Western notions of modernity are built.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In particular, Salcedo is addressing a long legacy of racism and colonialism that underlies the modern world. A &amp;lsquo;shibboleth&amp;rsquo; is a custom, phrase or use of language that acts as a test of belonging to a particular social group or class. By definition, it is used to exclude those deemed unsuitable to join this group. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;lsquo;The history of racism&amp;rsquo;, Salcedo writes, &amp;lsquo;runs parallel to the history of modernity, and is its untold dark side&amp;rsquo;. For hundreds of years, Western ideas of progress and prosperity have been underpinned by colonial exploitation and the withdrawal of basic rights from others. Our own time, Salcedo is keen to remind us, remains defined by the existence of a huge socially excluded underclass, in Western as well as post-colonial societies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In breaking open the floor of the museum, Salcedo is exposing a fracture in modernity itself. Her work encourages us to confront uncomfortable truths about our history and about ourselves with absolute candidness, and without self-deception.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Doris Salcedo was born in 1958 in Bogot&amp;aacute;, Colombia, where she lives and works. A monographic display of her work can be seen on Level 3 as part of the Poetry and Dream collection displays.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;______________________________________________________&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the heart of Doris Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s work is the visual articulation of that which is so often unacknowledged or made invisible: the victim of violence, the refugee, the immigrant, the decimated domestic sphere, the disregarded social contact. Salcedo fashions a space in which these realities can be both recognised and legitimised. Since 1985, her consistent address of individual and collective tragedies has fanned out from the specific circumstances of her native Colombia to abuses visited upon humanity across the globe. By giving physical manifestation to experiences of human suffering, she bears testimony to mechanisms of power that have diminished people&amp;rsquo;s sense of self and the public sphere. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Salcedo grounds her art in intense research, which includes prolonged fieldwork and extensive interviews with those who have experienced violence and loss. Seeking out direct accounts, or obtaining physical evidence from victims or their relatives and friends, she becomes what she calls a &amp;ldquo;secondary witness&amp;rdquo;. To articulate catastrophe visually, she has consistently resorted to techniques of eradication, disfiguration, blockage and especially removal. The last of these offers a particularly effective way to represent trauma &amp;ndash; not only because disaster literally annihilates people and things, but also because when attempts are made to recall it, there is often a failing of memory, since trauma has the effect of obliterating its own recollection. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Atrabilitarios (1991-1996) brings this point home. Shoes inserted into cavities in the wall &amp;ndash; physical voids &amp;ndash; are half-concealed by semi-opaque layers of animal fibre roughly stitched over the openings of the niches with surgical thread, as if they were rectangular gashes requiring coarse suturing. These works are portraits of desaparecidos &amp;ndash; the &amp;ldquo;disappeared&amp;rdquo;, as victims of Colombia&amp;rsquo;s civil war are often called, in yet another term of absence &amp;ndash; for whom a shoe may be the only means of identification left. The image of shoes barely visible through the fibre stands for the location of the victim subject to erasure, the blurred recollection that trauma induces in surviving family members and the continued condition of racking uncertainty in the face of an unresolved disappearance. A tragedy that can never be recollected in full, or in full focus, leaves a permanent sense of absence, here transposed to real space.&lt;br /&gt;Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s objects and scenarios locate themselves at the fault line between vanishing and emergence. In La Casa Viuda (1992 &amp;ndash; 1995), Upland: Audible in the Mouth (1998) and a series of untitled sculptures (1989- 2001), she took found doors, tables, armoires, chairs, bed frames and other pieces of furniture &amp;ndash; objects symbolic of the domestic sphere and its sustaining social bonds &amp;ndash; and upended, flayed, dismembered and grafted them together in brutal and disturbing juxtapositions. Voids such as drawers and shelves she filled with cement, so that the furniture&amp;rsquo;s original functions were absented, making way for the emergence of sculptures that are functionless save for their clear ecapitulation of destruction wreaked upon the home. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Salcedo roots the unnameable violence portrayed in her works in a visceral and insistent materiality whose rawness is compounded by the discreet yet highly charged use of organic and domestic materials &amp;ndash; hair, bone, buttons, wood, fabrics such as silk and cotton. Though close to home and self, these elements become uncanny when hand-woven into sculptural compositions with the greatest of care, through long, deliberately painstaking labour. This exhausting process may be the only way that allows Salcedo to feel that she can bear legitimate witness to pain and suffering. Surfaces are obsessively worked and reworked, not only using aesthetic processes common in artists&amp;rsquo; studios, but also sewing, wrapping, mending and patching &amp;ndash; modes of healing labour, usually associated with the home or hospital, that are also determinedly ritualistic. From these rigorous processes evolve surfaces of a subtle and poignant delicacy, even at the epic proportions of her more recent, architecturally scaled work. Such pronounced emphasis on tactility grounds the viewer in the presence of the work and in immediate experience. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s earlier sculptural vocabulary took the domestic object as its point of departure, she has more recently taken into account the work&amp;rsquo;s architectural container. Tenebrae: Noviembre 7, 1985 (2000) announces this transition. The work was inspired by events that the artist herself witnessed: in 1985 Colombia&amp;rsquo;s Palace of Justice, in the heart of the nation&amp;rsquo;s capital of Bogot&amp;aacute;,was seized by leftist rebel forces, trapping more than 300 civilians inside. During the ensuing military counter-offensive the building was torched and 100 people died. The Colombian government has never formally acknowledged its responsibility in this event, and Tenebrae is a sculptural environment [installed at various locations] that articulates this silent obstruction to commemoration. Entering the first of two galleries the viewer is faced with a physical obstacle: two chair forms cast in lead sit upended on the floor, their radically extended legs of another eleven chairs pierce the walls, partially absorbed into the room&amp;rsquo;s physical structure. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With Neither (2004) the merging of artwork and architectural perimeter is complete. Here, metallic chain-link wire fencing was forced into a layer of plasterboard imitating the gallery walls and placed directly over them, leaving the centre of the space empty yet emotionally fraught. The fencing is evocative of an all-too-familiar language of incarceration and exclusion, the material language of detention centres, industrial security enclosures, private property perimeters, contested national borders and other areas restricting individual movement and freedom. Neither further develops Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s vocabulary of phantom image as political presence: the fencing material seems simultaneously to be sinking into and emanating from its plasterboard ground, as if to bring the question of boundaries &amp;ndash; of who is inside and who outside, who is displaced and who is protected, who is absent and who present &amp;ndash; to its finest, skin-thin point. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Abyss (2005), which was temporarily installed at the Castello di Rivoli in Turin, is likewise a haunting and disconcertingly visceral experience. Entering a low doorway that has been partially bricked in at its top and sides, the viewer feels immediately constricted, his or her body instinctively bending down and closing in on itself, as if preparing for a blow. Once inside, the visitor is faced with a square room whose four large walls are encased in a curtain of brick and cement hanging from the eighteenth-century brick-vaulted dome. Since the curtain walls don&amp;rsquo;t touch the ground, the space feels as if it were on the verge of collapse, infusing the experience with a crushing oppressiveness. While moving away from the specific histories of Colombia, Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s work has remained close to the universal nub inherent in those events &amp;ndash; issues around power and powerlessness, freedom and incarceration, communicated in material terms. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These latest works have undoubtedly prepared the artist for Shibboleth, her installation in Tate Modern&amp;rsquo;s Turbine Hall. At the time of writing the work remains very much under wraps, but given Salcedo&amp;rsquo;s long-time concerns, one can imagine that she will be interested in using the Turbine Hall&amp;rsquo;s role as a public space to speak to the lack of civic dialogue globally. We live in an age of radically divergent means, and quality, of access to a collective arena. For an artist such as Salcedo, who has personally witnessed a disintegration of public life and space, and has long devoted herself to materialising the conditions of displacement and exclusion, the Turbine Hall may be the perfect vehicle for lending voice and visibility to those who are denied access to the public sphere. If her work has consistently been constructed around invisibility, one can imagine her asking of the Turbine Hall: who is left out of this space of community and communication? The issue of who can inhabit public space is pivotal to our society, as witnessed by the obverse international insistence on walls and boundaries that speak to people&amp;rsquo;s division and exclusion. Salcedo will surely have us engage in a dialogue with that which is absent, and in a concentrated, fervent and veracious reflection on our lives and times.&lt;a name='cutid1-end'&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;</content>
